5 Reasons for Canadian Seniors to Winter in Phoenix, Arizona
72
Phoenix, Arizona is a popular destination for many Canadian snowbirds each winter. I recently had the chance to interview a real life snowbird to find out why. Here are 5 reasons why Phoenix is the place to be according to Patricia, a 67 year old Canadian.
1. The Climate
When I left Canada on my last trip it was winter (-5 degrees Celsius, or about 22 Fahrenheit) and when I walked out of the Phoenix airport it was 75 degrees Fahrenheit (about 25 degrees Celsius). From winter to summer, just like that!
2. You can restore your health in Arizona.
When I left Canada I had bronchitis, a chronically sore shoulder, and chronic asthma. Within 3 days I was completely well, to the point where I didn’t have to use my inhaler at all. In addition to this huge blessing, my shoulder magically got well! That dry heat and Vitamin D from the sun go a long way toward vibrant health.
3. The scenery is spectacular.
I couldn’t quit taking pictures of palm trees, countless varieties of cacti, and that unfailingly blue sky. Sunsets on the desert are unobstructed and stunning!
4. The many tourist attractions.
I visited an old abandoned mine which has been refurbished as a tourist attraction. It was close to the Superstition Mountains, and the view of the desert was splendid - a perfect photo op. Or you might want to visit the Desert Botanical Garden, the Arizona Museum of Natural History or the Arizona Science Center, to name only a few.
5. Shopping
I came home with two suitcases full of items I could buy cheaper in Arizona than I could ever buy here in Canada. I found everything from vitamins to toys for my grandchildren to be much less expensive in Phoenix. And of course, clothes are inexpensive and oh, so available. A certain fashion flair is evident in the free-spirited design, with lots of glitz thrown in for fun! This is in contrast to our somewhat more conservative Canadian fashion.
No matter where you are in greater Phoenix, there is no shortage of affordable shopping. I have a friend who lives out in San Tan Valley, which is a new district that has developed over the past few years. Even there, most things you need are obtainable at the lovely new malls a short drive away. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such an efficient network of freeways that link the cities and communities existing within Greater Phoenix.
But the best part about visiting Arizona is relaxing in the sun. After the initial shopping frenzy, I just wanted to sit in my friend’s outdoor living room and soak up those rays.
Are you ready to enjoy the good life as a Snowbird in Arizona? Don’t forget to pick up some snowbird insurance before you leave Canada! It’s not worth the risk to go without it.

I spent many Christmas vacations in Arizona as a kid and it is a fabulous location! The dry heat is restorative healthwise too.
