3 Things to Consider When Buying and Fitting Shoes
By Tarasview
Finding the right shoes can be tricky. Here are 3 important things to keep in mind when you are shopping for that perfect pair of shoes.
1. Does it fit?
This may seem like an obvious point but it is often ignored. How many of us have purchased shoes because we loved how they looked- not how they felt?
Always make sure that the width and the length are right for your foot. When you are standing the forefoot should reach from side to side without stretching the upper of the shoe. In other words the widest part of your foot should sit in the widest part of the shoe comfortably.
The shoe should also have enough depth to accommodate your toes without pressure. Your longest toe should be one centimeter from the end of the shoe. You should be able to wiggle your toes around! Your heels should fit comfortably in your shoes with as little slipping around as possible.
It helps to match the basic shape of the shoe to the basic shape of your foot. Is your foot rounded? Then go with shoes that are rounded. Don't try and stick a squarish foot in a pointed shoe. That will only cause you pain.
Did you know that your feet never stop changing? The size of your feet changes as you grow older so it is important to have your feet measured before buying shoes. Feet tend to swell throughout the day so the best time to measure your feet is at the end of the day when your feet are largest.
Most people have two different sized feet- always fit the larger foot. Don't choose shoes based on the size marked inside the shoe but by how the shoes actually fit your feet.
Avoid foot pain!
2. Is it comfortable?
Perfect fitting shoes will feel roomy and comfortable from the very first time you put them on.
Always thoroughly check the inside of the shoes for wrinkles or large seams that might cause blisters or sores.
If your feet tend to swell during the day choose adjustable shoes. Shoes with laces or Velcro can keep your foot in place while still allowing you to adjust them as needed.
Resist the urge to buy shoes that look great but feel too tight expecting them to stretch to fit. Shoes should have a comfortable snug fit but should not feel tight or binding. Walk around in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right before you buy them.
3. Is it healthy for your foot?
Shoes with soles made of flexible, cushioned, non-slip materials will help to absorb shock and provide traction to help you avoid slipping and falling. When the upper of the shoe is made of a natural breathable or vented material it will prevent build-up of moisture in the shoe.
Heels should be kept under 3cm tall. Low-heeled shoes are more comfortable, safer, and less damaging than high-heeled shoes. Choose shoes with good arch support. Shoes with a strong heel counter cup and support the heel and help stabilize the foot. This will prevent you from twisting your ankle or something even more painful.
Once you have determined that they shoes fit comfortably and safely than you can enjoy how great they look!
