How to Expedite Your Passport Renewal
62
Long gone are the days were people could freely pass through the US and Canadian borders. Now like everywhere else in the world it is required to have valid travel documents when crossing the border.
Passport renewals are obtained for any one over the age of 18 years and above. Unfortunately if it has been more than 5 years since your passport has expired you will have to apply for a new one. Although it is always good to have a valid passport, it is very easy to put off renewing your passport till the last minute. However, an emergency requiring you to travel will usually not give you the leisure to wait for the 4-6 weeks for your travel documents to be renewed. In cases like these services that expedite your passport renewal might be necessary.
People who need their passport renewal applications typically have three options: mail application, regional agency or through a private expediter.
A mail application will take the longest even if you do choose the expedited option. You can expect your passport application to be complete within 2-3 weeks if you choose overnight delivery. That is, if you are not the 20% of Americans that get their application rejected, missing necessary documents being the main reason.
Travelers can opt to go to a Regional Agency if the renewal is required in less than 2 weeks. You must make an appointment by calling the National Passport Information Center. However, sometimes you might not be able to get one in time, especially during the holidays were it can get particularly busy. Through the Regional Passport Agency you can expect to receive your renewed passport in 2 weeks.
If you are really in a rush, the best way might be to go through a private expediter. The faster you need your renewal application expedited the higher the cost. Using a private expediter you can expect your application to be completed from a week or even the next day. Just be sure to check that their expedited passport renewal service is guaranteed.
